To our guests

Hugo’s was where the Big Tree Hospitality story began, and it will always be one of the most important parts of our history, but we have made the difficult decision that Hugo’s will not be reopening as a fine dining restaurant.

First opened in 1988 as a bistro and piano-lounge by Johnny Robinson as a tribute to his son, Hugo, the restaurant underwent many iterations over the years. Bought in 2000 by Rob Evans and Nancy Pugh, Hugo's quickly became one of the most avant garde restaurants in the country, earning Rob Evans significant national accolades including Food and Wine Best New Chef 2005 and James Beard Best Chef Northeast 2008. Rob and Nancy mentored Big Tree Hospitality founders Andrew Taylor, Arlin Smith, and Mike Wiley for four years prior to selling the restaurant to them in 2012. The Big Tree trio renovated the space in 2015 and Hugo's thrived until COVID forced its closure in March 2020.

We are grateful for the love and community that made Hugo’s such a special place to dine and gather, and we will miss creating intimate dining experiences that allow our guests to share space with our chefs.

We will honor unredeemed gift cards for Hugo's at Big Tree Hospitality’s other Portland restaurants, Eventide Oyster Co. and The Honey Paw.

Private Events

Such a special place deserves to keep hosting meaningful events. We are happy to announce that the Hugo’s space is available for parties and small private events, with catering available from Big Tree Catering.

Big Tree Grocery

Big Tree Grocery is our once a week grocery pick-up offering you access to our chefs’ favorite pantry items, our pastry team’s fresh baked bread, kits to recreate favorite dishes from our restaurant and catering menus, cuts of meat we love sourced from our favorite farms and prepped for you in our kitchen, and more.

Hugo's was owned and operated by Big Tree Hospitality.
